How
did your journey begin?
The common theme faced by everyone called
to care for a loved one with mental illness
is that it is a journey you did not choose
for yourself. It literally just 'happened
to you', often 'out of the blue.'
Ed and Jane got a phone call from their son's
college informing them that the campus police
had been called to respond after their son
terrorized his roommate with a Samurai sword,
set fire to his bed, and barricaded himself
in his dorm-room.
Lisa first heard about her husband's troubles
when the emergency room nurse called to let
her know that the police had brought him in
because he had vandalized a convenience store
during an episode of fitful rage.
How did it all begin for you? Minor disturbing
events at first followed by awful ones that were
terribly frightening? A sudden shock wave so destructive
that somebody nearly got hurt? Or did you for
a long time live with the feeling that something
was amiss and then finally got to the bottom of
it?
