Have we accurately described the realities
you are faced with?
Given these realities, does it surprise you that maintaining
your sense of personal stability, your self-confidence,
your level of commitment as a caregiver, is extremely
challenging?
What, Then, Do I Do?
In Self Test 2 "Build
Caregiving Skills", you'll assess your current
skill level in six practice areas that all caregivers
must develop. Intentionally building your skills as
a caregiver is one thing you can do to manage the difficult
realities of mental illness.
In Self Test 3 "Deepening
Awareness ", you'll explore a different way
of being with painful feelings. Changing how you react
to painfull feelings is another action you can take.
As human beings in difficult circumstances, most of
us naturally look for ways to eradicate our pain or
confusion. We have a sense that we should get on top
of things, get rid of things, change ourselves and our
circumstances. We cast about for a way to make ourselves
feel better. And in so doing, we expend a great deal
of energy and achieve little or no actual results. Self
test 3 points you in the direction of a more productive
approach.
"Everything has its wonders, even darkness
and silence, and I learn, whatever state I may be
in, therein to be content."
Helen Keller - author, activist, lecturer
